JHU/PCS started working on an AIDS Memorial Quilt for Rwanda in 2000. It is hoped that this new project would help to "Break the Silence" about the growing HIV/AIDS situation within Rwanda. The Quilt is the first of its kind in this country and is modeled off of the Names Quilt in the US and in South Africa. The Quilt made its debut during World AIDS Day on December 1, 2000 with an opening ceremony at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. As many as 300 panels were included in the initial Quilt. The panels were created by local artists at the request of the families in honor of those who died of the disease. It has been recorded that one out of every 10 people have been diagnosed with HIV within Rwanda. The Quilt will continue to serve as a reminder of HIV/AIDS in Rwanda.
