JHU/PCS has been working on AIDS prevention activities in South Africa with USAID, the Department of Health and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) since 1999. Primary technical assistance has been provided to members of a consortium in charge of the national HIV/AIDS campaign entitled "Beyond Awareness II."
Through this collaboration, AED has worked closely with LifeLine, a non-profit organization which has established several different types of counselling hotlines in South Africa and other countries. AED has been working specifically with the AIDS Helpline, which fielded 360,000 calls in 1999 and is in the process of expanding and centralizing its calling centre. AED’s technical assistance has focused on the development and implementation of a two-week training course for hotline counsellors and a four-day Training of Trainers workshop for Helpline staff. JHU/PCS has provided additional assistance to the Helpline for the purchase of new equipment and the improvement of monitoring systems and information resources.
