After nine years of living overseas in Bangladesh, Bolivia and Ecuador, Lucia
joined AED in July of 1994 to work for the Johns Hopkins
University/Population Communication Project. She has extensive experience
working with a variety IEC projects, managing and providing training and
technical assistance focusing on reproductive health and communication
throughout the Latin America region, and Africa.
Lucia has specialized in designing and facilitating highly participatory training workshops on communication methodology, material development and interpersonal communications skills for multi-level staff in reproductive health. She is responsible for the local and regional coordination of the Latin American JHU/PCS Advances in Family Health Communications Workshops held every two years in the region. On the programmatic aspect, Lucia works with ASHONPLAFA, a Honduran NGO, providing technical assistance and management support in IEC. She also works closely with the Honduran Secretariat of Health in the design and implementation of the Integrated Women's Health Communication Campaign to reduce maternal mortality in the country. Before joining AED, Lucia was the JHU/PCS Local Representative in Bolivia and Ecuador where she established and coordinated working IEC technical committees to develop IEC strategies. She organized and facilitated several JHU/PCS seminars and workshops on communications techniques in Spanish. Other Experience 1982- 1984 National Association of Spanish Broadcasters Coordinator: Lucia organized a non-partisan Hispanic Voter Registration Program sponsored by the Spanish Television Network, Washington D.C. office, for the 1984 election. A series of public service television and radio spots were used to significantly increase the awareness of the Hispanic community of its voting rights and to enable it to participate in the 1984 election. While in Bangladesh from 1984 to1988, Lucia was a volunteer working for the Arshi Skills Development Center for Underprivileged and Destitute Women in Dhaka, which is a private voluntary organization for destitute women. She handled the marketing of the income generating products produced by the women, including the design of a catalog to facilitate sales. Lucia initiated exports through Save the Children and other organizations in Canada, England and Singapore. Born in Peru, Lucia has a BA in Communication from the Instituto Superior Particular Montemar. Fully bilingual, she also is fluent in French and conversant in Portuguese. |
